Starting from the 13th century, the Old Johannis Cemetery was, for over six centuries, the major burial place for the citizens of Leipzig. Discover the oldest urban cemetery with its many tomb monuments. From the 13th century onward, the Old Johannis Cemetery served as the major burial site for Leipzig's citizens for over six centuries. About 280,000 burials are documented for this period. The cemetery reflects the rich history of the city of Leipzig from the beginning of its flourishing period to its peak at the end of the 19th century and commemorates countless famous personalities of the city. We also report on the search for the burial site of Johann Sebastian Bach and the regulations for burials to avoid being buried alive.
