The barracks district in Möckern is a testament to Leipzig's military history. The first barrack buildings were constructed as early as 1875, with further buildings following from 1895. The old garrison base, the Pleißenburg, no longer met military requirements, and the military was significantly expanded. Large military complexes were built in the north of Leipzig, where initially the Royal Saxon troops were quartered. Later, among others, the Reichswehr, Wehrmacht, National People’s Army, and the Soviet Army came. Large parts of the barracks area have been repurposed for residential use, and part of the area is still used by the Bundeswehr today. The tour begins at the longest barrack building in Europe and leads to the General Olbricht Barracks of the Bundeswehr.
