Initially, 250 patients were accommodated in buildings constructed in the typical pavilion style. The clinic gained worldwide renown under the leadership of Director Dr. Paetz. Significant developments at that time included the open-door policy, the colonization of mentally ill individuals, the introduction of the wax hall system, and work therapy. The State Healing and Nursing Institution Altscherbitz was also involved in the euthanasia program during the Nazi era. Approximately 7,000 patients were murdered due to insufficient care, illness, starvation, or directly in camps. During the time of the GDR, the neurological department with specialized outpatient services and the child neuropsychiatric clinic were established. We will take a tour of the grounds and visit the history gallery.
