In addition, the artistically staged permanent exhibition is divided into three tours: "Antiquity to Historicism", "Asian Art" and "Art Nouveau to the Present". The first-class collection comprises around 270,000 exhibits of European and non-European arts and crafts, from antiquity to the present day. The GRASSIMESSE, which takes place annually in October, also attracts visitors.
Today's GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts was opened in 1874 as the second German museum of its kind. The museum owes its name to the merchant and patron Franz Dominic Grassi. Built between 1925 and 1929, the (new) Grassi Museum with its leafy courtyards and the park-like Johannisfriedhof cemetery is a place of inspiration, peace and relaxation in the heart of the city of Leipzig.
The museum accompanies children, young people and adults on their discovery tours through 3,000 years of art and cultural history. The free media guide, which leads visitors through the permanent exhibition, is particularly recommended. Visitors can put together their own tours, discover the highlights of the collection or go on a rally through the museum. Two separate tours are available for children, which guide them through the museum in a playful way. The media guide is available in German and English, and there is also a version for blind and visually impaired people as well as in sign language and easy-to-read language.
As a place of inspiration and education, the museum offers a variety of events and projects for all ages and interest groups. For families, there are museum festivals, family Sundays and intergenerational activities. A special highlight for families is the annual GRASSIFEST in September with creative workshops, guided tours, rallies and games. During term time, school classes of all levels can take advantage of the curriculum-related events on offer at the museum. During the school-free period, the motto is "ACTIVE HOLIDAYS". The museum also has a varied program for daycare centers, where the little ones can get active and creative.
The GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts is an inclusion sponsor.
The Grassi Museum of Applied Arts was awarded the special prize of the Saxon Museum Prize 2025 for its innovative themes such as sustainability and participation.
