Mildenstein Castle

At a glance

For 1,000 years Mildenstein Castle have been rising above the valley of the Freiberg Mulde.

Salian kings, Staufers, Wettins: Mildenstein Castle is one of the oldest castles in Saxony. The Wettin dynasty built a notorious prison behind the metre-thick walls. To this day, visitors shudder at the sight of the multiple lockable doors and bizarre instruments of torture. The wooden construction of the Gothic granary floor, the keep, the Romanesque castle chapel and the medieval knights' halls are particularly impressive. "Frieder Berg", the witty donjon, tells of his adventures. The exhibition "The Court of the Young Lords - Mildenstein Castle as the Elector's Nursery" completes the family-friendly programme in Central Saxony. Events take place in the "Black Kitchen" and the "Prince's Parlour" in a unique ambience.

In the interactive multimedia tour of the "Schlösserland erleben"Discover the everyday life of the princely children at the castle together with Hedwig von Sachsen and learn how fire was made in the past in a mini-game.
