To a Bürgerbräu in the Schachtelbud!

The place where today you can enjoy a freshly tapped "Oberwiesenthaler Bürgerbräu" with an Erzgebirge tarte flambée by the green tiled stove was used to produce boxes until 1990. Hence the name "Zur Schachtelbud", by which Thomas Herberger's inn and guesthouse is known, especially among the locals.

Typical Erzgebirge coziness and lots of wood greet hungry diners in the restaurant. In the middle of the wall paneling behind glass is a display case: small and large boxes, rarities covered with fabric and decorated with shells, just like you would find in your grandmother's jewelry box. They are a relic from the time when the box factory was at the heart of the place where people eat, talk and laugh at tables today. Back then, craftsmen conjured up exquisite packaging from simple materials. The menu reads much the same today. Here, Erzgebirge tradition and down-to-earthness are spiced up with ever new, clever ideas - resulting in a culinary delight.

Everyone knows potato pancakes, known as "Klitscher" in the Ore Mountains. But green sauerkraut Klitscher are new to most guests. They are a house specialty and, like many other dishes, are made from regional ingredients. The potatoes from the farmer in the neighboring village are mixed with homemade sauerkraut. No more can be revealed, except that a hearty goulash tastes best with it. This is also a reminder that the Czech border is just a stone's throw away - so traditional dishes from the Bohemian Ore Mountains are not to be missed. The words "hmmm Erzgebirgisch" (Ore Mountain) on various dishes on the menu show guests what they can expect to find on the menu. Incidentally, the menu changes regularly depending on the season and the regional vegetables on offer, which Thomas Herberger attaches great importance to.

A spicy beer goes best with buttermilk patties, baked potatoes, classic pork schnitzel and the Erzgebirge tarte flambée, which is a variation on the Alsatian version with sauerkraut and black pudding on sour cream. Brewing beer has a long tradition in Oberwiesenthal. One of the best breweries in the Erzgebirge existed here from 1535 until the 1950s. Thomas Herberger's father revived the beer tradition on the occasion of the 475th anniversary celebrations in 2002. You can now enjoy Oberwiesenthaler Bürgerbräu, brewed by a brewery outside the city limits, in six restaurants in the town on the Fichtelberg - and most often in summer in the "Zur Schachtelbud" beer garden.
