Start of the season at Gnandstein Castle

At a glance

A castle straight out of a picture book: with its keep, battlements, battlements, shield wall and palas, Gnandstein Castle is a must-see for medieval fans. Gnandstein Castle is probably one of the best-preserved Romanesque fortifications in Saxony. The history of the castle, which rises near the "pottery town" of Kohren-Salis, goes back over 800 years. It was founded by loyal followers of the Wettin dynasty. It later came into the possession of the von Einsiedel family. They lived here from the 15th century until the end of the Second World War without ever giving up the castle key. An old legend reinforces the medieval aura: to this day, a previously undiscovered treasure is said to be hidden in the castle grounds. Treasures from seven centuries that have already been found can be admired in the exhibition at Gnandstein Castle.
The 800-year-old complex can be visited again from April 1, 2025.
