The Freiberg Christmas market takes place in the historic city centre and combines contemplative Christmas atmosphere with traditions from the Ore Mountains.
At Christmas time in the Erzgebirge, many wonderful traditions are cultivated, such as the pyramid pushing, mountain parades, Mettenschichten, Hutzenabende and Mariä Lichtmess. The glittering lights envelop the entire region in a festive atmosphere. Smoking men, pyramids, nutcrackers and candle arches decorate the rooms and windows. A pleasant scent of incense fills the air and spreads a feeling of cosiness. A very special atmosphere can be felt at the numerous small and large Christmas markets.
In the middle of the festively illuminated old town of the silver town of Freiberg, the original mining Christmas market opens daily from 26 November to 22 December 2024. The imposing mining pyramid sits enthroned on the market square, surrounded by around 90 wooden huts with typical Erzgebirge products. There are special events and offers such as a mining workshop, Father Christmas consultation hours and Christmas parties. Many of the 250 shops, many of which are owner-managed, invite you into the medieval streets of the old town on Sundays open for business on the first and third Advent.
The highlight is the traditional mountain parade by torchlight with the Historical Freiberg Mining and Metallurgy Miners and the Saxonia Freiberg Mining Music Corps on 7 December 2024 from 5 pm.
Young and old can practice their ice skating skills on the ice rink in the castle from 16 November 2024 to 2 March 2025. Visitors can experience Freiberg underground on a discovery tour or during historical and musical Mettenschichten in the silver mine.
