The Elbe covers a distance of 1,091 kilometers from its source in the Czech Giant Mountains to its mouth in the North Sea. Geographically speaking, the Elbe is divided into three sections - the Upper, Middle and Lower Elbe. The so-called Middle Elbe, a meandering lowland river, characterizes the north-eastern area of the Leipzig region.
From the thousand-year-old Roland town of Belgern, canoeists can paddle through the historically significant Elbe bridge to the Renaissance town of Torgau. Here in Torgau there is also a public rest area for canoes, rowing boats and motorboats with a slipway and direct access to the town center.
Between Torgau and Dommitzsch, the northernmost town in Saxony, there are many sandbanks for swimming and relaxing.
