The area of the Saxon Hills is known for its beautiful meadows and idyllic woodlands. The trail begins at Gnandstein Castle, one of the best-preserved Romanesque castles in Saxony, and leads through the famous pottery town of Kohren-Sahlis along the meadows of the Wyhra to the large district town of Borna.
As early as 1519, Borna was the first town in Ernestine Saxony to have Protestant preaching. It was here in Borna that Martin Luther wrote the famous Ash Wednesday letter on March 5, 1522 and preached four times in the town church of St. Mary's in 1522. There is a special Luther memorial in front of the town church. It was created by Burgdorf artist Hilko Schomerus and inaugurated in 2011. Today, Martin Luther Square is home to the Emmaus Church in Heuersdorf, which was relocated from Heuersdorf to Borna in October 2007.
