Natural history and geological theme trail near Groitzsch.

In 2004, the newly created hiking trail from Hohendorf to Neuer Geyersberg was planted with the trees of the year. For 15 years now, a "Tree of the Year" has been chosen by a Germany-wide board of trustees. There are corresponding criteria for nomination every year. With the exception of the silver fir, which does not grow in the region, all the designated trees were planted along this path or were already there.

The "Tree of the Year 2005" was the horse chestnut, which has also found its place along the trail. Each tree is described by an information board, on which the distribution areas, the wood properties, the use of the wood and also the mythology of the trees are indicated.

At the foot of the New Geyersberg (171 m above sea level) with its magnificent panoramic view, three larger information boards have been erected, which deal with topics such as the kingdom of plants, open-cast mine restoration and the world of animals. Many seats offer hikers and cyclists a welcome resting place.

The geological nature trail, which continues south of Hohendorf, shows 186 boulders, mainly of Scandinavian origin (granites, diorites and gneisses, some with visible glacial striations as a special feature), recovered from the nearby open-cast mine and partly provided with identification boards. Well-designed educational panels provide information on the topics "In the realm of plants", "The world of animals" and "Open-cast mine restoration". A memorial stone commemorates the village of Schleenhain, which was resettled in 1964/65.
