The GEOPFAD is made up of 16 over-man-high steles erected at Lake Markkleeberg and Lake Störmthal. Each with its own special theme, they provide an insight into the history of the earth, which was revealed during the time of lignite mining in the Espenhain open-cast mine.

The geological trail mainly follows the eastern shore of Lake Markkleeberg and Lake Störmthal. The steles along the route provide information on: Geology and mining, Espenhain open-cast mine technology park, geological profile through the Quaternary period, stone adventure playground.
