In Johanngeorgenstadt, the youngest mining town in the Ore Mountains, you can see many witnesses to the "mining hustle and bustle" of the past. Along the educational mining trail, you can still discover tunnel mouths, the remains of a punching plant and old mining dumps.
The two most interesting objects on the mining trail are the show mine "Frisch Glück", popularly known as "Glöckl", and the "Pferdegöpel", a replica of a mechanical device for shaft hoisting. The entrance to the "Glöckl" with the opportunity to "be a miner yourself" is a special experience, especially for children. After all, mining is one of the last great adventures. With a bit of luck, you can meet the mountain spirit here.
There are various candle arches on the Pferdegöpel site, including some with historical motifs. The nickname "Johanngeorgenstadt - town of the candle arch" comes from the fact that this traditional candle arch originated here in 1740. Just a few steps further on, at the miner's square, you will find attractions of superlatives - the highest pyramid in the Ore Mountains and the largest free-standing candle arch in the world.
To recharge your batteries for so much culture, you can start your hike with coffee and cake at the "Café Mertsching" in the former Wittigstal manor house. The walk ends in the "Am Pferdegöpel" restaurant with delicious regional cuisine and a hearty sip of "Göpelgeist"; children can enjoy homemade cake.
