Station of the Weißeritztalbahn Schmiedeberg
Station of the Weißeritztalbahn Schmiedeberg
Schmiedeberg is located south of Dresden, in the middle of one of the most beautiful high forest hiking areas in the Eastern Ore Mountains. A romantic highlight is the journey on the narrow-gauge railroad, which winds its way through the dreamy valley of the Rote Weißeritz.
Once you arrive at the historic train station in Schmiedeberg, walk approx. 100 m along the small road from the station forecourt, under the dwarf-like bridge in the direction of the B170. Once there, turn left into the local park and after 100 m you will find yourself in front of the citizens' office (Rittergut).
To walk around Schmiedeberg, start at the citizens' office (old manor house). Walk up Schenkgasse for approx. 500 m, past the fire extinguishing pond on the right, until you reach the Brandweg garage complex on the right-hand side. After 200 m, cross the Pöbelbach. Turn left onto Pöbeltalstrasse and after approx. 200 m the circular hiking trail leads right into the forest across a meadow to the Teichleite. (Unfortunately there are no signs from the footpath and the path is not recognizable. The sign for "Teichleite" can only be seen above at the bench approx. 10 m away). Now follow the signs to Teichleite. When the forest thins out, you are at the popularly known "Eichhörnel". This is one of the vantage points with a view of Schmiedeberg. From here you have a view of the Molchgrund and the Bauverein. Follow the path for approx. 300 m to the next fork in the hiking trail. The path now leads down the small road to the right, over the Weißeritz Valley railway tracks, to Lutherplatz with its old lime tree.
Continue left, past the school and follow the road to the left for approx. 500 m. Go straight on past the Martin Luther King Home as far as the Hammerhaus. Here you cross the Rote Weißeritz and the B170 road. Continue left along the B170 for approx. 100 m until you reach a small forest path on the right-hand side. Follow this forest path straight ahead, past the kindergarten, until you reach Molchgrundweg. Then cross the road onto Molchgrundweg. Now walk up the opposite side of the road to the Bauverein. Once there, you walk 350 m along beautiful gardens, with a wonderful view of the Brandweg, the Pöbel valley and the "Eichhhörnel" all the way to Obernauendorf and again with a view of Schmiedeberg, to the Bauverein nature playground. It's worth taking a break here for the whole family. Once your rest is over, the trail continues 200 m further through the forest to Hessenbach/Voglergrund. The 100 m short ascent on a well-surfaced forest path to the next forest path junction is quickly completed. Turning right through the forest, the path leads past the Voglergrund for 500 m. About 100 m after the Voglergrund, the unpaved blast furnace path leads off to the right (not signposted). Along the road behind the historic industrial buildings, the path leads downhill to the right to the B170.ö Once you reach the B 170, turn left. After 400 m along the B170, cross the road again over the Rote Weißeritz and the Weißeritz valley railroad tracks to the Salzleckengründel. Follow the road at the Ahnewand for approx. 200 m uphill, then turn right. Now continue straight ahead along the Mühlgraben. When you reach Schenkgasse, turn right and walk downhill. Pass under the Weißeritztalbahn bridge. Immediately after the bridge, a narrow path leads off to the right to the train station. Once you reach the station access road, follow the access road on the right under the bridge to the station.
The Schmiedeberg church is a special treasure - after all, George Bähr, the later architect of Dresden's Frauenkirche, was at work here from 1713-1716. The church was built on the ground plan of a Greek cross:
It is a central building - the altar and pulpit are moved far into the middle of the church, the congregation gathers around word and sacrament. The music - in the form of the organ above the pulpit and altar - completes this picture. You can see this in the big sister of our church - the Dresden Frauenkirche. The Schmiedeberg church thus brings out the unity of word, sacrament and music particularly clearly.
All in all, the Schmiedeberg church is a very beautiful, bright, cheerful, welcoming and uplifting space. The beautiful ridge turret from 1734, with its clock and bells, is also an adornment and helps to organize the day both spiritually and practically.
Today, the Schmiedeberg church regularly hosts church services as well as concerts. The consecration of the church is celebrated here every year on Trinity Sunday. The interior of the church was renovated in 2014 and 2015. It celebrates its 300th birthday in 2016.
