From Hof, this stage now leads into the Saxon Vogtland. Castle ruins, fortified churches, and palaces blend into the picturesque landscape.
The Burgstein area has always been a border region between the dioceses of Naumburg and Bamberg. However, in the 20th century, it was located in the restricted zone due to the German division. Now, especially hikers and history enthusiasts are rediscovering this unique cultural landscape. You should definitely visit the former pilgrimage churches on the Burgstein and the Leubnitz Castle – now a museum and tourist information center. In Mühltroff, you will find Heinrich von Plauen, who after the Battle of Tannenberg in 1410 successfully defended Marienburg and rose to become the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. Plauen erected a monument to this important knight in front of the Old Town Hall in 1923. Also notable are the romantic castle ruins in Elsterberg and Liebau, popular hiking destinations in the Vogtland Switzerland.
On this stage, the cultural route also introduces visitors to many medieval churches, some with valuable interiors.
