Start the tour at the Görlitz-Information at the Obermarkt. Here you will also get a map and further information. The Obermakt was a film location for films such as "The Monuments Men" and the Trinity Church (Dreifaltigkeitskirche) was used for the film "Grand Budapest Hotel". You can also find here a part of the "Walk of Görliwood". The "Walk of Görliwood" shows with film props decorated shop-windows at different places in the city the diversity of the film city of Görlitz.
Walk along the Fleischerstraße to the Nikolaivorstadt and the Nikolaifriedhof. The baroque cemetery with its historical tombs and burial vaults was used for the German-French coproduction "Frantz". Go back to the old town and the Untermarkt. The Untermarkt was used for a lot of film productions e.g. "Goethe!", "Around the World in 80 Days", "The Book Thief", "Inglourious Basterds" or "Der Zauberlehrling". It is possible to visit the corner house "Brauner Hirsch" inside which is an original film location. Here at the Untermarkt you can also find further parts of the "Walk of Görliwood" (Neißstraße 9).
Go along the Neißstraße to the Old Town Bridge (Altstadtbrücke), which has been connecting Görlitz and Zgorzelec since 2004. Walk along the shore to the Stadthalle. This Art Nouveau building was the entrance for the hotel in "The Grand Budapest Hotel". It is also possible to turn left in the Neißstraße into the Kränzelstraße where further scenes for "The Grand Budapest Hotel" were produced. Next follow the Kränzelstraße to the Jakob-Böhme/Bergstraße and you can see an original backdrop: the wall with the writing "Wählt Thälmann!". The writing was placed there in the 80s when the film "Ernst Thälmann" was shot in Görlitz.
Fans of the film "The Grand Budapest Hotel" will also notice the square here which was used for different scenes in the film.
Via the Elisabethstraße and the Marienplatz you will reach the Art Nouveau Departement Store (Jugenstilkaufhaus) - maybe the most beautiful departement store in Germany! Its entrance hall was used as lobby for "The Grand Budapest Hotel". Also Kate Winslet passed this department store with the tram as a conductress in "The Reader".
Crossing the Postplatz you will reach the Jakobstraße, where in the building with the house number 5a scenes for the film "The Reader" were shot in 2008. The main character Hanna (leading actress and winner of the Acadamy Award Kate Winslet) lives in an apartment of this house. Walk along the Jakobstraße and turn right at the Wilhelmsplatz into the Konsulstraße and then Emmerichstraße. Here in the southern part of the Wilhelminian style district of Görlitz scenes for "The Tower" were shot. Go back to the Konsulstraße and walk towards the railway station. The railway station is an Art Nouveau building too and very popular with film crews. Emotional welcome and farewell scenes were shot here such as in "The Silent Revolution". Follow the Bahnhofstraße in direction of the Brautwiesenplatz, which is the first roundabout in the world. Scenes for "The Captain" and "The Reader" were shot in the Landskronstraße.
