With its white gables, Colditz Castle is one of the most beautiful architectural monuments of the 16th century in central Germany. During the Second World War, it served as an important prisoner of war camp for high-ranking officers of the Western Allies. Among the prisoners were Winston Churchill's nephew and the nephew of the then British King George VI. The escape museum tells of many creative escape attempts - including secret tunnels and a secretly built glider. The book "The Colditz Story" and its film adaptation made Colditz Castle near Leipzig world-famous. Today, international guests reside royally in the modern Europa Youth Hostel and enjoy the unique atmosphere of Colditz Castle during events and guided tours.
