For the first time, the “German Watch Museum Glashütte – Nicolas G. Hayek” Foundation is paying a comprehensive tribute to one of the founding fathers of watchmaking history—Carl Moritz Grossmann, born on March 27, 1826, in Dresden.

200 years ago, Moritz Grossmann was born—a figure whose work had a lasting impact on German watchmaking and established its international reputation. Yet he was more than just an outstanding watchmaker. He was a visionary, a methodical thinker, and a passionate teacher. As the founder of the German Watchmaking School in Glashütte, he created an institution that systematically imparted knowledge and transformed watchmaking from a purely empirical trade into a well-founded technical discipline.

Moritz Grossmann also left his mark as an author and theorist. His writings attest to a deep understanding of mechanical principles and a desire to make knowledge accessible and verifiable.

To mark the 200th anniversary of his birth, previously unpublished designs from 1914 are on display. They reflect the effort to erect a monument to Moritz Grossmann in the town of Glashütte!
