For 47 years, the Silbermann Days have been building bridges between tradition and modernity and connecting generations of music and organ lovers from all over the world. They were founded in 1978 in a unique joint effort by the state and the church. In 1993, the International Gottfried Silbermann Organ Competition was organised for the first time. Today, the Silbermann Days have developed into a renowned organ festival with international appeal, which at the same time stands for deep roots in the region and history, but also the courage to explore innovative formats and push boundaries.
The XVII International Gottfried Silbermann Organ Competition, in which the best young organists from all over the world compete every two years, will also take place as part of the Silbermann Days in 2025. It is held in honour of the great Saxon organ builder and is the only competition that is only held on the original baroque instruments of Gottfried Silbermann and his pupils. Since its foundation in 1993, the music competition has developed into one of the most important competitions for historical organs. The jurors - all internationally recognised organ specialists - can also be experienced as artists at the Silbermann Days. The participants are not only attracted by the attractive prize money, but above all by the unique opportunity to demonstrate their skills on the historic Silbermann organs from the 18th century. For many, the competition is also a career springboard, as the prizewinners are given the opportunity to give concerts on Silbermann organs and other famous historical instruments throughout Germany and beyond. It is not uncommon for them to return to the Silbermann Days later as jurors.
