Pavilion of Fear - a mobile art and participatory project in Chemnitz

At a glance

What does fear do to us? Fear is an intense feeling that we all know. It can warn us, shake us awake or paralyze us. The Pavilion of Fear is a special meeting place that will travel through the city of Chemnitz in the summer of 2025, stopping off in different parts of the city. At the locations, communicative offers will give people the opportunity to initiate mutual learning and experience processes: from personal conversations, to singing and painting together, to a reading or an open-air movie. Fear as a basic human emotion can thus be explored in its ambivalence through different formats. Performances, activity stations and discussions make it clear that fear is not only an obstacle, but can also be a driving force.

On individual days, students from Chemnitz University of Technology, Chair of General and Biopsychology, will conduct a survey of visitors to the pavilion about their fears, which will then be scientifically evaluated.

The Pavilion of Fear is an educational program that will be held in the run-up to the exhibition "Edvard Munch. Fear" at various locations in the city of Chemnitz. The exhibition, which focuses on the feeling of fear, will be shown in the art collections on Theaterplatz from 10 August 2025. Paintings and prints by Edvard Munch on loan from international and national institutions and private collections will be on display in the museum in dialog with contemporary positions.
