Leipzig Christmas Market
From 26 November 2024, the time has come again: the scent of mulled wine and roasted almonds is in the air, the magic of lights and craftsmanship can be marvelled at. The Leipzig Christmas market takes place from 26.11. to 23.12.2024 in seven different market areas in the city centre.
Its tradition dates back to 1458. Just like 500 years ago, it blends harmoniously into the fascinating historical backdrop of the city centre. With over 300 originally decorated stalls, it lives up to its reputation as one of the largest and most beautiful Christmas markets.
The traditional main area of the Christmas market is the market in front of the Old Town Hall. There you will find a Christmas tree over 20 metres high and the market stage with its extensive Christmas programme.
Of course, the well-known attractions are also a must. In addition to the fairytale land on Augustusplatz, the 38 metre high Ferris wheel offers a unique view over Leipzig. Just a few metres further on, Augustusplatz becomes more international. The Finnish village presents itself with typical local delicacies such as glögi and flamed salmon and the South Tyrolean village with specialities such as Schüttelbrot and Kaminwurzen.
In Salzgässchen, the historically recreated multi-level carousel invites you to take a ride. The popular Feuerzangenbowle pyramid is located in the Nikolaikirchhof courtyard. The "Alt Leipzig" medieval market on the Naschmarkt brings visitors closer to art and craft traditions.
The Leipzig Christmas market is particularly popular for its child-friendly offerings. In addition to the fairytale forest with its many adventure areas, the arrival of Father Christmas with the steam locomotive at the main railway station is another highlight. Santa's office hours take place on Thursday and Friday from 4 pm on the market stage. In Grimmaische Straße, nine large animal figures and mushrooms will light up between real fir trees on a ground covered in rice. The magical forest with deer, rabbits, foxes and other animals offers just as impressive photo opportunities as the six angels on the Thomaswiese.
Visitors can also enjoy a range of food and drink. At the Christmas market, over 100 delicacies such as oven-fresh pretzels, Pulsnitz gingerbread, tarte flambée, langos, Kräppelchen, poffertjes, mulled beer, apple punch and Leipziger Stollen invite you to nibble and linger. Once again this year, the traders will be paying particular attention to sustainability.
The Erzgebirge Christmas decorations and the large selection of toys, ceramics and spices are particularly popular souvenirs. Visitors should also not miss out on listening to the traditional trombone players playing from the balcony of the Old Town Hall (Mon-Thu 6pm, Fri 7pm, Sat-Sun 1pm and 7pm). The world-famous St Thomas' Boys Choir performs in St Thomas' Church during Advent.
