Great art in a small church - "The Universe in a Pearl" by Rebecca Horn

At a glance

Rebecca Horn (1944-2024) is considered one of the most important contemporary German artists. Her vertical sculpture "The Universe in a Pearl" is on display in the Hospitalkirche St. Georg, a pilgrimage and cultural church in Lößnitz in the Ore Mountains, until November 30, 2025. The sculpture, which was created in 2006, has already traveled through many churches, including in London, Mallorca and Hamburg. The last time tens of thousands saw it was in 2018 in Berlin's St. Hedwig's Cathedral before its renovation.

As if from the bowels of the earth, the sculpture rises up to the golden blue of the firmament. When visitors look into the rotating mirrors at the bottom, their gaze falls endlessly into the depths of a shaft. If you look upwards, you can see swirls of light rising upwards. The exhibition is part of the PURPLE PATH art and sculpture trail and can be seen until November 30, 2025. Lößnitz is also home to two monumental porcelain sculptures by Austrian artist Uli Aigner on the PURPLE PATH as well as the Chemnitz 2025 maker hub "Lößnitz MAKERS - #diemacherei e.V.".
