To mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation by US troops, Colditz Castle will be showing the iconic images of the liberation of Leipzig by war photographer Robert Capa (1913 - 1954) from August 22, 2025. Capa had accompanied the troops from France to central Germany since D-Day. The
special exhibition "
Capa in Colditz"
shows 20 photographs and can be seen in the castle's vaulted cellar until the end of November 2025. Access is
free of charge and possible during the museum's regular opening hours. The exhibition was created in collaboration with the Capa House Leipzig. From September 1, 2025, Colditz Castle with its historical photographs and legendary escape stories will be a guest at the Capa House in Leipzig. The images by Robert Capa are being made available by the International Center of Photography in New York. His pictures will be complemented in the exhibition by photographs showing the
day of liberation in Colditz. Among the US troops of the 69th Infantry Division was J. Malan Heslop, who as a Mormon was not obliged to fight, but had to serve as a reporter and photographer. He documented the liberation of the castle in a few pictures.
Under the motto "If your pictures aren't good enough, you weren't close enough", Robert Capa also impressively documented the events of the Spanish Civil War and the Indochina War in Vietnam, where he was fatally injured by a landmine in 1954.
