The festival kicks off on Friday, August 21, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., inviting visitors to explore Europe’s largest still-operational steam locomotive depot.
Guests will have the opportunity to experience the fascinating world of railways through Sunday. Among the highlights are undoubtedly the approximately 60 locomotives on display, which serve as testaments to bygone eras and technical masterpieces. Particularly impressive are the special steam-powered train rides on the historic museum train, which evoke nostalgic memories of journeys of the past.
The biggest highlight for visitors will be the grand locomotive parade, taking place on both Saturday and Sunday. During the parade, the operational locomotives will pass by visitors on the parade track. In addition to a miniature railway layout, light railway rides, a bouncy castle, and a model train swap meet, refreshments will of course be available every day. Kids will also have a great time—and by the way: Admission is free for children accompanied by adults every day!
The Chemnitz Heizhausfest thus offers a unique opportunity to experience the past, present, and future of the railroad up close and to be inspired by the fascination of this captivating industry.
