200 years of the Semperoper Ballet

200 years of Semperoper Ballett - Celebrate with us!

The founding anniversary of today's Semperoper Ballett can be traced back to the exact day: On 1 April 1825, three ladies with specialist training were initially engaged and paid exclusively for dance activities. This official act, which Carl Maria von Weber had already called for a few years earlier, marked the beginning of the eventful history of today's renowned ballet ensemble, which now radiates far beyond the borders of Dresden.

The 200th anniversary of the Semperoper Ballett will be celebrated with an accompanying programme that offers some special ballet moments in addition to the premieres and the repertoire of the current season.

File reference: "200 years of the Semperoper Ballett"
On the occasion of its 200th birthday the historical circumstances that led to its foundation two centuries ago - at a time when stage dance was still regarded as a decorative garland or entertaining side effect of opera and theatre - are explained in the archive format File reference. Although there is no official historical evidence for the exact date of its founding, it was nevertheless possible to pinpoint the "birth" of the Semperoper Ballett to the exact day with detective flair and to shed some scientific light on the year 1825: For example, what part did court conductor Carl Maria von Weber play in the creation of the ballet? What tasks did the so-called "Maitre de Ballett" fulfil? And how did people deal with the shortage of skilled artists 200 years ago? Answers to these questions are presented on the basis of selected archival documents and at the same time reference is made to other formative highlights from the history of the Semperoper Ballett.
