In the Land of 1,000 Crosses - W kraju 1.000 křižow

Many golden crosses shine along the paths and little streets north of Bautzen, the capital of the Sorbs. The lively faith culture shapes the Slavic minority living here. Bilingual signs and countless wayside crosses accompany visitors along the entire route.

In many places, Sorbian can still be heard in everyday interactions of the inhabitants.

Churches, monasteries, and chapels in the small villages testify to the lived Catholic faith of the Sorbs and invite one to pause and take a deep breath. Especially impressive is the regionally unique cemetery in Ralbitz with its uniform crosses symbolizing equality before God. Sorbian customs are also made visible to visitors several times throughout the year, for example during Easter, the bird wedding, or the witch burning.

The regional cuisine is particularly popular. Traditional Sorbian wedding soup can be found on many menus here.
