Scenic circular hiking trail with approx. 11km length
Leisure pool at the Greifensteine (Badstraße 2)
Leisure pool at the Greifensteine (Badstraße 2)
We start at the leisure pool Greifensteine and initially keep left along Thumer Straße towards Geyer. After approx. 80m we cross the road and turn right into Weißen Weg. Here hikers enjoy a wonderful distant view of the Ore Mountains ridge and up to the Czech Republic. Follow the yellow trail marking towards the TV tower and follow the green trail marking in the forest to the left to the Kneipp basin. This is located directly by the waterfall and the former timber mining collapse, a relic from old mining times, and offers with its numerous benches a first worthwhile resting opportunity. Now it goes uphill to the roller ski track and further along Lärchenweg to the Waldschänke restaurant. A wonderful panorama rewards us along the way. At the Waldschänke we cross Elterleiner Straße and use the left turn into Buttersteig towards Geyer (yellow trail marking). Beautiful forest and great views of Geyer make us forget all everyday worries. The yellow-marked hiking trail leads us to the Altmarkt with post distance column, tourist info, bakery, corner shop, and a spacious square with water play to linger. We leave the Altmarkt towards the Binge, passing the Tower Museum and the historic Lotterhof. A detour to the Tower Museum (local history museum in the watchtower) offers interesting insights into the mining and urban history of Geyer. The town’s landmark, the Binge, was created by two major mining collapses in 1704 and 1803 and today houses rare mosses and lichens as a natural monument. An educational trail guides you through it. The former adits and fire holes in the bizarre rock formation are still clearly visible. From the Huthaus we now follow the EB route Eisenach-Budapest along the Bingeweg. At the Pollmer memorial stone we leave this and reach via the path up to the Schlegelsberg (yellow marking) back to the leisure pool Greifensteine. A sauna visit or a wellness offer at the leisure pool round off the eventful day.
