Discover the lower basin of the Markersbach pumped storage power station between hydropower and forest idyll.

The hike starts directly at the parking lot at the lower reservoir of the Markersbach pumped-storage power plant. Information boards on the dam wall provide fascinating insights into the operation of Germany's second largest pumped storage plant, which is an impressive technical site in the heart of the Ore Mountains. Together with the upper reservoir, the lower reservoir plays a central role in the temporary storage of energy from renewable sources and is therefore an important component of the energy transition.

As you cross the dam wall, the striking viaduct on the left catches the eye: Deutsche Bahn is now testing autonomous driving on this historic railroad line - an exciting project for the future on a route that is only used for passenger transportation on a few days a year.

After crossing the dam wall, the path turns right into the forest and leads around the entire lower reservoir on well-maintained paths. The species-rich forest is particularly impressive: numerous different tree species accompany the hikers and offer a real nature experience for attentive eyes. Time and again, clearings open up to reveal views over the water and the surrounding landscape. On the way back, two lovingly designed rest areas provide welcome breaks. A very special place awaits visitors at the Mühlchen: many small water wheels, seating areas and creative play options make this place a highlight for young and old.

A few meters further on, another water wheel awaits - this time a large one - along with a shelter and Kneipp facility for refreshment. The last few meters back to the parking lot are on an asphalt path.
