An inexhaustible abundance of bizarre rock formations, forested, wildly romantic gorges, and majestic table mountains with breathtaking views: the “Malerweg Elbsandsteingebirge” in the Saxon Switzerland National Park region offers all of this. From the very beginning, artists in particular have been drawn to these picturesque rock formations. Follow in the footsteps of famous Romantic painters such as Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus, and Ludwig Richter. On this historic hiking trail, experience the fascinating rocky landscape of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains at its most picturesque. And while you’re at it, enjoy the numerous sights, such as Pirna—the “Canaletto City”—or the home of the Impressionist painter Robert Sterl in Wehlen-Naundorf, as well as the many inviting restaurants along the way.

The Malerweg leads through gorges and secluded wooded areas, past sandstone formations and impressive views.

Various sections of the trail offer magnificent panoramic views to the left and right of the Elbe, with views of freestanding table mountains.

In addition, hikers on the Malerweg should always be aware of current detours and trail closures. In parts of the national park region, bark beetle damage, fallen trees, or broken branches in particular can cause individual sections to become impassable at short notice. Caution is especially advised in windy conditions, during heavy rain, or when there is heavy snow accumulation. Therefore, check the current trail conditions before your hike if possible and follow on-site signage. This will help you stay safe on the Malerweg and reliably reach your destination even if there are last-minute changes.
