On little-trafficked roads and meadow paths, the "Lutherweg Sachsen" runs along the river "Pleiße" from Crimmitschau to the former residence city Altenburg. Not only the large cities are worth seeing. You also encounter worthwhile churches and historically valuable houses in the small towns along the way.

After leaving the Frankenhausen monastery, the "Lutherweg Sachsen" approaches the Thuringia state border. Here there is a connection to the "Lutherweg Thüringen". In Ponitz, both routes meet. In Altenburg, they separate again. Altenburg has a special significance for the Reformation. It was not only one of the most important residences of the Saxon electors. It is also associated with the name Georg Spalatin, who was the closest confidant, secretary, and confessor of Elector Frederick the Wise. As Luther's confidant, Spalatin was an important mediator between Luther and the elector for many years.
