Wolkenburg is located in the charming valley of the Zwickauer Mulde river. The area belongs to the north-western part of the Vorerzgebirge. From Penig, you walk along the river until you climb up through a beautiful wooded area to Wolkenburg Castle, which rises above the banks of the river.
The route from Penig to Wolkenburg leads through the Mulde valley. For long stretches, the route runs directly along the Mulde cycle path, making it a quick and easy ride. The route crosses the Mulde several times as it runs alongside the river and then passes through the forest near the village of Wolkenburg. Wolkenburg, with its beautiful castle, rises above the left bank of the Mulde on a rocky outcrop of mighty granite boulders. Luther bought the Zöllsdorf estate from his brother-in-law and gave it to his wife, Katharina von Bora, in 1541. He then asked the lord of Wolkenburg Castle to lend him 12 bushels of grain and 24 bushels of oats.
