Leipzig's Neuseenland, a landscape of lakes, forests and floodplains created from former open-cast mining, is known far beyond Saxony's borders and is a popular vacation destination. The alluvial forests surrounding the city of Leipzig, with their rare plant and animal species, are also a rarity. On this tour, you will combine all this with the flair of the big city and the sites of the Reformation, such as St. Thomas Church, Pleißenburg Castle and Auerbach's Cellar.

The Luther Trail between Neukieritzsch and Leipzig leads directly through the southern Leipzig New Lake District. On paved paths, between huge, beautiful lakes, which were created from former open-cast mines, through forests and floodplains, the hiker reaches Leipzig. This unique lake landscape attracts countless tourists from Germany and abroad every year. The floodplain landscape and forests in and around Leipzig are also known for their impressive flora and fauna. From Lake Cospuden, through Keesschen Park in Markkleeberg, past Leipzig Wildlife Park, along the Elster floodplain to the city center, this is an unusually impressive route in terms of natural landscape. In 1519, the disputation between Luther and his opponent Eck took place in Pleißenburg Castle in Leipzig, which led to Luther's break with Rome and ultimately to the imposition of the imperial ban on him. It was only after the death of Duke George the Bearded that the Reformation could be introduced in Albertine Saxony and thus also in Leipzig.
