The city of Leipzig has a long and varied sporting tradition with numerous locations that are closely linked to regional, national and international sporting history. The sports route was developed by the Leipzig Sports Museum.

The sports route takes young people, families and senior citizens on a journey through Leipzig's 200-year sports history at 22 selected stations. Some of the stops are of supra-regional significance for sport. They show the most important sports venues, significant events, outstanding sports and well-known personalities.

By 2023, six stations of the Leipzig Sports Route will have been inaugurated with information steles and information boards (1, 5, 7, 8, 17, 18). The remaining stations will be opened in the coming years. Until then, the original, historic locations can already be visited on site. Some of the historic buildings and sports facilities have been preserved.

In the summer months, the Sports Museum offers guided cycle tours along the sports route.
