The German Unity Trail (WDE) runs over 1080 km from the easternmost city of Görlitz to the westernmost city of Aachen. This hiking trail was born out of an idea after reunification in 1990 and is intended to help bring people from East and West together and thus promote German unity on a human level.

Existing main and long-distance hiking trails of the participating hiking clubs are used along the entire route, with WDE signs appearing occasionally. In the Ore Mountains, the trail crosses Altenberg-Zinnwald - Holzhau - Seiffen - Olbernhau - Rübenau - Jöhstadt - Kurort Oberwiesenthal - Rittersgrün - Johanngeorgenstadt - Carlsfeld close to the Czech border.

(the section Altenberg - Neuhausen OT Georgenthal is still missing from the route)
