The GEOPFAD consists of 16 steles taller than a person, which were erected at the Markkleeberger and Störmthaler Lakes. Each one is dedicated to a special topic and provides insight into the Earth's history, which was exposed during the lignite mining at the Espenhain open-cast mine.

The Geopath mostly follows the east shore of Markkleeberger and Störmthaler Lakes. The steles along the route provide information on geology and mining, the technology park of the Espenhain open-cast mine, geological profile through the Quaternary, and a stone adventure playground.
