A nice route where you can get to know our mountain range a little.
The start is at the "Haus am See" at Olbersdorfer See. You head towards the new development area Olbersdorf, commonly known as Golanhöhe, to the Bertsdorfer Kleinbahnhof. Then simply follow the tracks towards Oybin. There is a good chance here to see our local (steam) train, affectionately called Bimmelbahn. A long valley cut accompanies you towards the Oybiner Kessel. At the end of the cut, you can already see Mount Oybin. A huge beehive made of sandstone, a paradise for climbers, like the other rocks that shine out of the forest.
You reach Oybin station and ride through the "tourist mile" of the village: here, numerous inns, the tourist office, and a picturesque mountain church located on a rocky slope are lined up. And here also begins the ascent to Mount Oybin (fee required). Along the village street, you come to Hölle. More precisely, to the Hölle district, where even in summer the sun is usually visible for only a few hours a day.
Continue along Liststraße. On a property to the right, you can discover a rock called Geburtstagsspitzel: this rock was placed in a garden during GDR times as a small thank you to a former mountaineer and pediatrician. Whoever climbs it can even immortalize themselves in a summit book. Of course, we also have some proper climbing rocks in the program. For this, you have to ride a short distance on the road. From a distance, you can already see Kelchstein with its red sandstone. Now follows a short section that is technically demanding to ride. So don’t hesitate to push your bike for this short stretch. After a few meters on foot, it’s back in the saddle. But wait: the path is framed by mighty rocks up to 30 meters high – an impressive sight!
Soon you are back in the village of Oybin. On the eastern side, you leave the Oybin valley again. Near the inn Teufelsmühle, there is a small staircase – real fun for mountain bikers. A forest path leads you to Olbersdorfer village street heading north. Shortly before you meet the original route, you take a short detour into a sculpture park – definitely worth a visit. On the left, you now see the new development area. Now ride back a short way on the outbound route. At August-Bebel-Str., turn right onto the side street. From here, follow the signs back to Olbersdorfer See. Once there, you can perfectly relax on the beach chairs at the Seestern with a view of the Zittau mountains.
