Circular route around Augustusburg Castle

The walk around Augustusburg Castle can be started from the historic old town as well as from Bärengartenweg/Zschopautal hiking trail, from the Schlossauffahrt, or from the castle parking lot. 

From the castle parking lot, walk counterclockwise through Kurfürstin-Anna-Garten, which was created in honor of Electress Anna of Saxony. Here you can relax on benches among the herb beds and enjoy a wonderful distant view. The path then leads past the town hall with the tourist information into the historic old town. A stroll through the alleys around the market and church square offers insights into the city’s history and its buildings. Walking uphill on Schloßstraße and then turning left, the circular route passes the gatehouse on the right and then runs parallel to Bärengartenweg, which is also part of the Zschopautal hiking trail. Following the left turn at the end leads you back to the parking lot. 
(Due to construction work, the path along the castle wall is currently closed, likely until autumn 2022. Instead, simply follow the tip below.)

Tip: a passage through the castle courtyards also connects the old town and the castle parking lot:
Instead of walking to the right past the castle, from the old town, go through the gatehouse over the castle bridge into the front castle courtyard and straight through into the rear castle courtyard. After the passage, on the left between both courtyards is the exit, which leads you right back to the parking lot.

The loop can also be walked in the opposite direction.
