Castle Route

The starting point of the route is Ronneburg Castle. Especially worth seeing is the knights' hall. The city and school museum is located in the castle. Over the past years, the castle courtyard and open spaces, as well as parts of the building fabric, have undergone fundamental restoration step by step. From the viewing platform, there is a great view toward Neue Landschaft® and the Gessen Valley.

The next stop on this route is Posterstein Castle, located in the middle of gently rolling countryside. The castle and castle church are well-known tourist attractions. The village itself, with numerous well-preserved half-timbered houses and four-sided farmsteads, also invites you to visit. Blankenhain Castle, with its unique exhibition of rural life and work, illustrates a historical journey. The open-air museum with its many buildings completes the complex. In Wünschendorf lies the former Premonstratensian monastery Mildenfurth. It was founded in 1193, and around 1200 the Romanesque monastery church, of which only some parts are preserved, was built. The monastery is used by the artist couple Kühn as a residence, exhibition space, and gallery. The Castle Route ends in Weida. The widely visible symbol of the town is the Osterburg, the former ancestral seat of the Vogts. It was built in the 12th century as a Romanesque fortified complex. The 54 m high keep is the tallest and one of the oldest preserved keeps in Germany. The Osterburg is a meeting place for history, art, and culture.
