Frank Meutzner, the Saxon mountaineering guru par excellence, had the idea to bring the eight-thousanders of the Himalayas also to the Eastern Ore Mountains. And he succeeded!

Here with us, however, the summits are measured in decimeters, and so in the Altenberg holiday region, we have a great and interesting hiking route that connects the Ore Mountains’ "eight-thousanders".

From Geisingberg, over the Lugsteine, to the Pöbelknochen. The 14 different summits can be conquered in various ways: on foot, by bike, or even with cross-country skis. However, it can also be taken easy and the summits "climbed" in several stages. On this route, you can fully experience and enjoy the wonderful, pristine nature of the Eastern Ore Mountains. After completing the route, you too can claim to have climbed several eight-thousanders.

Directions

The starting point is the train station in Altenberg. The route initially heads towards Geisingberg (8238 dm). From there it goes downhill to Geising; you hike through the entire district along the main street. On the road towards Löwenhain, turn right onto Lindenallee to the Naturbad Hüttenteich. Passing the Hüttenteich, you hike through the Erdbachtal, turn left to Fürstenau, and reach Traugotthöhe (8066 dm). You hike the way back, then go left around the Kohlhaukuppe to Zinnwald. The Fuchshübel (8138 dm) lies directly on the way towards Zinnwald – the stamp station is not at the summit but at the shelter hut below. The hike then leads through forests between Altenberg and Zinnwald to Scharspitze (8072 dm) and over the Biwak-Kuppe (8285 dm) to Zinnwald-Georgenfeld. The next targets are the two Lugsteine (Great Lugstein 8992 dm & Little Lugstein 8937 dm). From there, you have a breathtaking view over the Bohemian Basin. You continue hiking past the Biathlon Sparkassen Arena. Behind the arena, the Wüste Höhe (8266 dm – also known as "Unnamed Height") hides. Further westward, you hike to Rehefeld and the Hemmschuh (8473 dm). The stamp station is next to the wooden hut at the ski lift. From Hemmschuh, continue on the Erzgebirge-Vogtland ridge path to Schickelshöhe (8049 dm). Then your path leads back on the Erzgebirge-Vogtland ridge path to Steinkuppe (8048 dm). The 14 eight-thousanders route continues to and through Holzhau to Kannelberg (8054 dm, also called Drachenkopf). It continues towards Hermsdorf until the district Schellerhau. Here lies the Stephanshöhe (8040 dm). Via the hiking trail running parallel to the village, you can reach this summit without any problem. Further on the path above Schellerhau, you reach Pöbelknochen (8328 dm). You are now on the return route to Altenberg. Passing the Galgenteiche, you return to Altenberg train station, the starting point. At the Altenberg Tourist Information, you can collect your finisher T-shirt after presenting your fully completed stamp card and voucher.
