Stadtmuseum Schloss Hoyerswerda – Municipal Museum at Hoyerswerda Castle

At a glance

Hoyerswerda Castle invites you for a journey through regional history and offers a versatile cultural and art programme.

Venerable walls are full of history. The castle of Hoyerswerda, which has been repeatedly restored and extended after being destroyed by war and fires, invites you on an exciting journey through time. In the new ErlebnisReich, the exhibition for the whole family, the history of the town is presented with many exciting discoveries and tricky puzzles.

Built in 1272 as a moated castle, it is the oldest building in the city and the ideal home for museum finds. On two floors, the town museum presents its permanent exhibition with exhibits from Hoyerswerda's prehistoric, early, middle and modern periods. A tour provides in-depth insights into the various eras and brings the city's eventful history back to life. The town museum rounds off its multifaceted concept with changing special exhibitions and special event projects.

The Hoyerswerda Castle and City Museum was awarded the special prize of the Saxon Museum Prize 2025 for its creative combination of museum and zoo.
