Preßnitztalbahn

At a glance

Experience old technology in the present day on the Preßnitz Valley Railway in the upper Ore Mountains and visit one of the most beautiful museum railroads in Germany!

Opened in 1892, the 750 mm gauge railroad once ran for 23 km from Wolkenstein (391 m above sea level) via Steinbach up to Jöhstadt (686 m above sea level). Operations were gradually discontinued between 1984 and 1986, and the line was completely dismantled by the end of the 1980s.
From ... the end ... No!
Thanks to the historical events of 1989, in 1990 energetic members of the Interessengemeinschaft Preßnitztalbahn e.V. association began rebuilding a section from Jöhstadt on a voluntary basis. 2000 saw the ceremonial opening of today's entire line from Steinbach (543 m above sea level) to Jöhstadt, and since 2021 the tracks have once again been laid directly in front of the historic station building in Jöhstadt. Slow down today on a tranquil steam train ride like in your grandparents' day. Treat yourself to a cold/hot drink in the buffet car, perhaps a freshly tapped Pils from the barrel and enjoy the passing nature, which offers its very special charms at any time of year.
A hiking and cycling trail runs along almost the entire route, you can stop off at the "Wildbach" or the "Forellenhof" and have a good time. And we will take your bike on the train free of charge after you have explored the Schwarzwasser and Preßnitz valleys and want to return to your starting point by train.

Climb aboard for a relaxing train ride, hear the steam locomotive whistle for departure and hear the conductor call:
"Please board and be careful when the train departs!"
