Literaturhaus Leipzig in the House of Books

At a glance

The Literaturhaus Leipzig in the Haus des Buches is a modern literary center with reference to the tradition of the buildings in the Grafisches Viertel.

In 1995 and 1996, a new literary center, the Haus des Buches, was built on behalf of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels (German Publishers and Booksellers Association) in place of the bookseller's house, which was destroyed in the Second World War, according to designs by the planning consortium Angela Wandelt and HPP Leipzig. The red brick ensemble is one of the most remarkable new buildings of recent years, and its construction is a continuation of the tradition of the city's Graphic Quarter.

Consisting of a comb building open to the south, a seven-storey tower and an old part of the building, the ensemble is connected by a glazed cube. Two atriums are concealed behind the glazing in the direction of Prager Strasse, one of which houses the metal installation "Letter Field". On Gerichtsweg, in front of the building complex, you will find a column of letters bearing the names of former Leipzig publishers.
