Founded in 1743, the Gewandhaus Orchestra is the oldest civil orchestra in the world and is one of the most renowned international ensembles. Looking back on more than 275 years of orchestral tradition, unique artists such as Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Arthur Nikisch, Wilhelm Furtwängler and Kurt Masur have shaped musical culture. As the 21st Gewandhaus Kapellmeister, Andris Nelson has been conducting the orchestra since 2018. In addition to more than 75 major concerts per season, the independent orchestra also performs at the Leipzig Opera and is in Johann Sebastian Bach’s weekly cantatas with the Thomanerchor.
