The steam trains of the Fichtelbergbahn puff along between Cranzahl and the spa town of Oberwiesenthal several times a day. If you would like to be active yourself, you can cover the entire route or just a section of it on the "Bimmelbahn adventure trail", which runs largely parallel.
The Bimmelbahn adventure trail combines nature, technology and Erzgebirge culture in a particularly charming way. It starts in the village of Cranzahl, where the small but lovingly designed Smoking Man Museum is well worth a visit right at the beginning. A real highlight for fans of Erzgebirge folk art.
The trail runs parallel to the narrow-gauge railroad "Fichtelbergbahn" and leads through wide fields, meadows and shady forests. Always accompanied by the whistling and puffing of the steam locomotive. If you are lucky, you can experience it up close in several places. It also makes a perfect photo opportunity.
In Neudorf, hikers can visit the show workshop "Zum Weihrichkarzl", where the traditional smoking candles are still made by hand. Directly opposite, the Neudorf Soup Museum invites you to linger with its curious soup-related exhibits. Ideal for families or in changeable weather.
In between, several huts, panoramic views and rest areas invite you to take a break, always with a view of the railroad line and the rolling hills of the Erzgebirge. The hike ends in the spa town of Oberwiesenthal, the highest town in Germany. In addition to the historic Fichtelberg railway station, there are also cozy places to stop for refreshments and numerous sights to see.
If you don't want to make the return journey on foot, simply hop on the steam train and be taken back to Cranzahl in style - a perfect end to this special adventure hike.
