Erzgebirgische Holzkunst – regional wooden handicrafts

At a glance

Almost no other district in Saxony is as popular for unique tradition of crafted wooden art and toys as the Ore Mountains.

The Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) are home to unique crafts known as Erzgebirgische Holzkunst. This handicraft from the Ore Mountains, with its rich store of figures and unique techniques of artisanry, is unrivalled. “Smoking men”, nutcrackers, Christmas pyramids and candle arches, as well as angel and miner candle holders, are known world-wide as the ambassadors of the “Echt Erzgebirge – Holzkunst mit Herz” brand. Hand-made at the heart of Germany, these figures reflect traditions and craft techniques which have been handed down through centuries and yet adapted to changing times. For example, ring turning and the making of wood-shaving trees originated in the Ore Mountains and have remained alive to this day.
