Timelessly beautiful - wallpapers from the turn of the century

At a glance

For the first time in the history of the Chemnitz Museum, a representative selection of the precious and never-before-seen collection of wallpapers from around 1900 is on display. Supplemented by targeted purchases of complete sample collections from French dealers and by extensive donations, such as from the Chemnitz wallpaper manufacturer Max Langhammer, the textile and applied arts collection here in Chemnitz now has over 1000 wallpapers. In addition to Saxon, German and Austrian wallpapers, there are also numerous English, American and French samples. With lush floral arrangements, ornamentally designed friezes or even strictly geometrically oriented decors, the wallpapers from the Art Nouveau period show how upscale elegance became an affordable part of everyday life for many.
