Theme exhibition "CHICKENS!"

At a glance

The exhibition includes more than 130 items and sets out the history of Meissen chicken figurines from the early 18th century right up to the present day.

Domesticated chickens are mankind’s most common farm animal. Statistically speaking, there are three times as many chickens as human beings in the world. So it’s no wonder the creatures are regularly portrayed in and on Meissen porcelain. Chickens were amongst the first animals to be modelled at the Manufactory. Poultry-shaped tureens placed on royal dining tables provided a preview of the delicacies contained within. Besides being portrayed singly or in their typical habitats, chickens are also used in figure groups to symbolise either the dawn or a fighting spirit.

The exhibition includes more than 130 items and sets out the history of Meissen chicken figurines from the early 18th century right up to the present day.
