The love potion (L'elisier d'amore)

At a glance

Opera buffa in two parts

The shy farmer Nemorino loves the landlady Adina. But Adina only loves her freedom. Even the prickly officer Belcore gets rid of them. The legend Tristan and Isolde leads Nemorino to invest his last pennies in a love potion of the quack salt Dulcamara. But he sells him nothing but country wine, and Nemorino has to refresh himself until he feels his erotic attraction to women. Adina is annoyed by the sudden arrogance of her admirer and gets engaged to Belcore.
Gaetano Donizetti’s 37th Opera is a remake of Eugène Scribes and Daniel François Auber’s Opéra comique Le Philtre, also in Milan. Donizetti and Romani formed a lively cosmos of Italian village life based on Goldoni’s model. Donizetti manages to strike a balance between inexhaustible, impetuous melody and cleverly elaborated action. In doing so, he never satirically exposes his characters and their emotional fluctuations, but creates people of flesh and blood with his music, as in Nemorino’s famous novel Una furtiva lagrima.
