The Key to Life – 500 Years of Mechanical Figure Machines

At a glance

Apparently within reach Utopias like 4. 0 and Artificial Intelligence are not real fantasies of our time, but can be traced back far. The museums of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden preserve a treasure trove of mechanical objects from the Renaissance to the present, as hardly any other museum association can show. For the first time, the Dresden collection is presented in an exhibition and is complemented by important loans on the history of the construction of artificial life with the help of mechanics. The exhibition focuses on mechanical figure machines, automated tools, drinking games and kinetic art, toys and music machines. Along three exhibition chapters on the table machines of the time around 1600, on the androids of the 18th century and about mechanical theatre in the 19th century shows how a new technology, mechanics, became popular in the last 500 years.
