Bernardo Bellotto, gen. Canaletto, and his successors in Saxon art.

The year 2022 marks the 300th anniversary Birthday of Bernardo Bellotto Canaletto (1722 – 1780). In addition to Rome, Vienna, Munich, Warsaw and Dresden, this outstanding Venetian artist also depicted Pirna in characteristic cityscapes known as veduten. They are characterized by precise reproduction of fortifications, streets and rows of houses. Scenes of everyday life liven up the squares. In doing so, Bellotto went far beyond architectural descriptions and provided important impulses for subsequent artists.

To this day, Canaletto’s views are fascinating as an homage to the desire for vision and the sense of history. Thus, the historical ensemble of Pirna can still be experienced in essential aspects, as the painter portrayed it.

In the special exhibition of the City Museum Pirna, Canaletto’s artistic work will be experienced through exemplary works. Exhibits from the City Museum’s graphic collection are on display, including Canaletto’s own large-format etchings of his Pirna views.
